Frequently asked questions

Can't find your answer? Call 07979 055366 (10:00–16:00) or email enquiries@chinnorrailway.co.uk.

Do I need to book a seat?
No. On Green, Red and Blue timetable days, Day Rover tickets are valid on any train and you can sit in any non-dining area. Special events such as Santa Specials have timed, reserved departures.
Can I start my journey at Princes Risborough?
Yes — trains run from Platform 4 at Princes Risborough, where we have our own ticket office on running days. It's ideal if you're arriving by Chiltern Railways.
Which engine will be running?
Green days are steam only, Blue days diesel only, and Red days alternate steam and heritage diesel. We occasionally need to substitute a locomotive for operational reasons.
Can I break my journey?
Absolutely. A Day Rover lets you hop off at Chinnor or Princes Risborough to explore the village or town, or enjoy a walk, then catch a later train.
Do you cater for groups and coach parties?
Yes — we welcome groups, coach parties, children's parties, weddings and celebrations. Find out more.

The Watlington branch, reborn

A Victorian light railway, a Great Western branch, a cement-works line — and now a volunteer-run heritage railway with its own route into Princes Risborough.

Our story

150 years on the line

  1. 1869

An Act of Parliament authorises the Watlington & Princes Risborough Railway, a light railway of 8 miles 66 chains.

  2. 1872

The branch opens on 15 August, with intermediate stations at Chinnor and Aston Rowant.

  3. 1883

After years of struggle, the Great Western Railway buys the line for £23,000 — less than half its construction cost.

  4. 1906

Rail-level halts open at Bledlow Bridge, Kingston Crossing and Lewknor Bridge.

  5. 1957

Regular passenger trains end on 1 July. Freight to Chinnor cement works keeps the line alive.

  6. 2016

Volunteers connect the railway to Network Rail's Thame branch siding, reaching Princes Risborough.

  7. 2025

On 5 July our volunteer-built independent line into Platform 4 is officially opened.
